Donald Westra Jr. M.D. – Church Sponsored Mission Trips for Medicine

Donald Westra Jr. M.D. retired from the field of medicine, but still tries to give back through his church. He has given his time and medical expertise to help those in need by enlisting in medical mission trips to places such as Venezuela, Peru, and Zimbabwe.  When deciding to go on a medical mission, it’s important for professionals to know what to expect. You can learn a little about the area by visiting government travel sites. You also want to follow a few guidelines that can keep you safe.

The first rule of thumb is to pack your bags moderately. Most organizations only allow you to take two bags, one for personal use and the other for medicine.  Try to pack just what you need and don’t bring valuables. Remember that many of these countries have a certain amount of poverty, so don’t be flashy and wear those designer jeans or shoes.

Learn more about the customs in the country that you will be staying. For example, can women wear pants? Can a man wear a pair of shorts? Are there certain gestures that mean something very different in this country?

Most importantly, know the rules of professional practice in the country where you are going. Your host organization most likely will have this information, but the responsibility falls on you to make sure you are practicing within the laws of the country. Some countries will want a copy of the health care practitioner’s licenses ahead of time.

Donald Westra Jr. M.D. enjoys traveling and is appreciative of having the opportunity to help people while also being able to see other countries.
