Donald Westra Jr. M.D. Joins Historical Wake Forest University

Donald Westra Jr. M.D. completed his medical training as a resident at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine from 1978 to 1982.  Named for Bowman Gray, Sr., a former president and chairman of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, The Bowman Gray School of Medicine was born from the $750,000 bequest Gray made in his will to be used for a community cause.  His family offered the bequest to a medical school willing to relocate to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.   Wake Forest’s Dean of Medicine negotiated for the bequest, leading to the opening of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine on the campus of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1941.

Donald Westra Jr. M.D. was taught by cutting edge curriculum by prominent faculty, synonymous with the growing reputation of the school, and Wake Forest University and the Bowman Gray Campus enjoy international renown today.  Bowman Gray is known for its strong focus on research, with Brenner Children’s Hospital, the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation and the Comprehensive Cancer Center all born of this strong commitment to finding cures, instead of merely treating, diseases and conditions.

The minimum GPA for applying students is 3.7, with a minimum of rigorous prior coursework requirements and a requirement to take the MCAT.  Overall, today’s Wake Forest School of Medicine (the prior Bowman Gray School) is the seventh most selective medical school in the U.S., with an acceptance rate of applicants to acceptance of only 2.9 percent.  Donald Westra Jr. M.D. is a proud graduate of his residency at Bowman Gray.
